Dire Straits is a British rock band founded in 1977 by Mark Knopfler (guitar, vocals), his brother David Knopfler (guitar), bassist John Illsley and drummer Peak Withers. The band's manager for most of her career was Ed Bicknell. Dire Straits' musical style, developed from pub rock, can be characterized as melodic blues rock, strongly influenced by country, rock and roll, folk and jazz. Melancholic compositions predominated in the group's work. Despite the fact that the band was formed during the reign of punk rock and strongly contrasted with it in sound, thanks to the talent of Mark Knopfler, it gained worldwide popularity. Dire Straits has become one of the most commercially successful bands in the history of rock music, with a total of more than 120 million copies of their albums sold. The band's most popular album, Brothers in Arms, has sold over 30 million copies. In 2018, Dire Straits were inducted into the "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame". The most famous hits of the group: "Telegraph Road", "Sultans of Swing", "Romeo and Juliet", "Private Investigations", "Money for Nothing", "Walk of Life", "Tunnel of Love", "Your Latest Trick", "You and Your Friend", "Brothers in Arms" and "Calling Elvis".
