Chesney "Chet" Henry Baker is an American jazz trumpeter and bandleader. Baker occupies one of the leading places in the galaxy of trumpeters who advanced in the initial period of the development of modern jazz. He is the first white trumpeter of the modern cool style in the field of combo jazz. He played an important role in Gerry Mulligan's experiments with "keyless" combo compositions, in which the lack of harmonic support for melodic voices by the piano part had to be compensated by polyphonizing the texture and required developed harmonic thinking from the ensemble members. These experiments were based on the synthesis of various stylistic elements of modern jazz, swing and modern academic chamber music, created the prerequisites for the subsequent flourishing of the cool style and the "third current". He also performed as a singer, in vocals he was distinguished by a soft lyrical manner of performance, had an unusually high, almost youthful voice.
