The American South produces a powerful spell. The sons and daughters of these deep states can leave their hometowns and make fortunes and families abroad. But wherever they roam, the South is under their skin— and one day he will call them home. So it was with Deep In My Soul: the album that lured Big Daddy Wilson from his base in Europe back to his homeland in the USA. "It was like coming home," he says. "Coming home to my roots was very sweet and special."

Released in 2019 on the label Ruf Records, the album Deep In My Soul marks a triumphant return to the US bluesman from North Carolina, who made a name for himself on the European stage such notable albums as Love Is The Key (2009), Thumb A Ride (2011), "I'm your man" (2013), "Time" (2015) and "the Stew of the bones of the neck" in 2017. The seeds of this new album were sown in May 2018, when Wilson traveled to Memphis, Tennessee, to prepare for filming with respected guitarist Laura Chavez and rock-resistant bassist Dave Smith. And everything fell into place when the bandleader began working with Grammy-winning producer Jim Gaines at his Bessie Blue Studios in Stantonville.

As Wilson completed work on the album at the legendary FAME Studios in Oil Shoals, Alabama, he realized that he was following in the footsteps of the greats. But even in the recording studio, where titans from Etta James to Dwayne Allman once performed, these new songs were true. This is a daring soul I Know. The soulful ripples of Mississippi. Ya. Wilson takes us from the funk with rubber band Tripping On You and I Got Plenty with a touch of reggae to the funky Voodoo with wow and the slow atmosphere of Crazy World. "I usually prefer an acoustic atmosphere," he explains. "But I was aiming for a soulful, more electric sound with the band on this one."

As for Wilson's lyrics, Deep In My Soul addresses love in all its forms: "Voodoo is about a holy man who does not believe in voodoo, but this woman has somehow possessed him, from which he cannot free himself. "Hold On to Our Love" tells the story of a mixed couple trying to keep the love of their lives despite the pressure from this world. I know when you've found the love of your life, everything inside you tells you that, without a doubt. You see, it's all about love. It's always about love."
