Audio-Technica AT-VM95SP is a new cartridge with a conical sharpening of the diamond tip of the needle. The conical profile with a large rounding radius of 3 mil is specially designed for playing old monophonic shellac and 78-rpm vinyl records with a wide groove profile (SP - for "Shellac" or Phonograph records). Since the VM95 series uses the same universal cartridge with different replaceable needles to play mono recordings, it is recommended to use the "MONO ON" function of your preamp or phono corrector, if there is such a function, to reduce noise from the damaged surface of the record. If you use a special archive phono corrector – equalizer, then you have various options for processing the mono signal from the stereo cartridge (Mono L + R, Mono L, Mono R, LR Variable Mix). The presence of several options for obtaining a mono signal allows professional archivers to minimize noise by selecting the least damaged side of the groove of an old recording.

The Audio-Technica AT-VM95SP pickup head can be turned into another VM95 series pickup at any time by simply replacing the needle. That is, you can always choose any other sharpening from the VM95 series: Elliptical, Elliptical nude, Microlinear or Shibata. The approximate service life of the conical needle AT-VMN95SP is about 500 hours.

General information on the Audio-technica AT-VM95 series

The new line of VM95 entry-level Dual Moving Magnet cartridges is designed by Audio-Technica based on the experience of creating pickup heads since 1962. Based on the rich heritage and experience of the company, the new line of six pickup heads of different levels, boasts the same body design to ensure easy replacement of the replacement needle and modernization of the head using a more advanced needle. This series also features a new generation of the AT95E cartridge, developed in Japan 38 years ago, many critics consider it the most successful entry-level cartridge of all time, which has sold more than 5,000,000 copies.

New items are not only affordable, but also convenient to use: they are easy to install and replace, since they are attached with only two screws. Moreover, the nuts are mounted in the housing of the heads and during installation it is enough to simply support the head, and not try to put the nut on a small screw, which sometimes is not easy. The model range includes a VM95C cartridge with conical needle sharpening (replacing AT91, AT91R and CN5625AL), VM95E with elliptical sharpening (replacing AT95E), VM95EN with elliptical NUDE sharpening, VM95ML with a Line Contact Microlinear needle, VM95SH with a Line Contact Shibata needle and VM95SP for old 78-rpm records. Needles can be purchased separately, all of them are suitable for any VM95 series head.
