Vinyl disc In The Tradition
The music matches what the title In The Tradition promises. Without a doubt, Ed Partyk's jazz orchestra continues the traditions of large jazz groups. It all starts with the formal: Fletcher Henderson, Earl Hines, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Woody Herman, Stan Kenton and Gil Evans called their big formations an "Orchestra", not a Big Band. At the same time, they stressed that they lead a constantly working orchestra, which, like a jazz orchestra, adheres to the same high standards as classical orchestras.
Ed Partika's compositions and arrangements are part of their tradition. Like the great orchestral leaders of the past, he treats his orchestra as a multi-layered instrument, the timbres of which he uses with all sophistication. Ed Partyka Jazz Orchestra plays polyphonic wind instrument parts, sometimes clear like Count Basie, sometimes sonorous like Duke Ellington, sometimes elegant like his teacher, composer and arranger Bob Brookmeyer. Anyone — like Ed Partick — who unites these extremes as coherently as if they were always connected to each other knows their business. At the same time, he creates something new, because, despite all the historical references, his orchestra does not imitate any of these historical models.
Ed Partika's imagination and skill go far beyond the standard big band arrangements. Where others would write a lot, he relies on powerful rhythms, voluminous wind instruments, clear pauses, subtle interludes, dynamic sophistication and a complex voice leading with subtle feeling. He also emphasizes instrumental solos and singer Julia Oschevsky with subtle orchestral coloring – this is also a sign of high musical quality. The best soloists crown these complex arrangements.
The recording from Ludwigsburg Bauer Studios makes it possible to capture the full depth of the sound of Ed Partika's jazz orchestra. Despite the orchestral richness, they are so transparent that each individual instrument can be clearly identified and traced. A wonderful album for jazz orchestra connoisseurs.
