It took three years to develop a pickup head with a Sumiko Starling movable coil, which Sumiko awarded the status of a new flagship. The name of the model translates as "starling" (starling). The cartridge belongs to the upper reference line of the Reference Series and uses some of the technical solutions involved in its younger brother Songbird.

The model received an aluminum body with an open console architecture, thanks to which it is possible to get rid of all kinds of parasitic resonances. Numerical control machines were used in its production. The electromechanical converter is mounted on a small console and has a certain slope, and for internal wiring, a wire made of purified copper is used here. Two threaded holes in the upper part of the case are used for fastening to the tonearm shell. The weight of the model is nine and a half grams.

The diamond needle of the pickup head boasts a MicroRidge profile, which has excellent wear resistance, guarantees excellent sound quality and is able to transmit the maximum amount of information "read" from the track of a vinyl disc. A durable holder made of a special long-crystal boron is used to attach the needle. Such a hard and lightweight material perfectly resists resonances, and also has good elasticity.

This pickup head has a low output voltage of 0.5 mV, so the choice of a phono corrector for Sumiko Starling should be treated with special attention. The ideal option in this case will be the purchase of a high-quality step-up transformer.
