The digital audio cable (Toslink, Coax, HDMI) is one of the most important audio cables of your system. Receiving undistorted sound on all channels depends on this cable alone. 

Distortion of synchronization information, called "jitter", is the main type of distortion of the digital audio signal. Optical fiber defects scatter the information transmitted by optical radiation. Inside the optical fiber, light travels along many optical paths, each of them has a slightly different length.
